RSO Sublingual Tips: How to Absorb More, Waste Less
Under the tongue is the faster route, and the one most people abandon after a week because nobody told them how to do it with something this sticky.
RSO sublingual, the short version
- Onset drops from hours to under an hourAbsorbed through the mouth, RSO skips the liver's first pass and shows up sooner and a little lighter.
- Ninety seconds minimumShorter than that and you have basically swallowed it. Set a timer the first few times.
- Thin it or park itMix the dose into a drop of MCT oil, or press it against the gum where it can sit still.
- Nothing in your mouth before or afterCoffee, water, toothpaste. Give it ten minutes on each side.
Every week someone tells us sublingual RSO “didn’t do anything.” Then we ask how long they held it. Ten seconds, maybe fifteen, and then a swallow. That’s not sublingual. That’s eating it with extra steps.
RSO sublingual dosing works. It just asks for a little patience and a couple of tricks, because RSO wasn’t designed to sit in your mouth.
Why bother with under the tongue at all
When you swallow RSO, it goes through your stomach and then your liver before it reaches your bloodstream. The liver converts a chunk of the THC into a different compound that many people find heavier and longer lasting. That’s the classic edible feeling, and it takes an hour or two to arrive.
Absorbed through the tissue under your tongue and along your gums, some of the oil goes straight into the blood. Onset gets shorter, often 20 to 45 minutes. The effect can feel a touch lighter and cleaner. For patients who want relief sooner, or who find edibles too heavy, that’s a real difference.
The part nobody explains: it’s sticky
Tinctures are thin. They spread across your mouth on their own. RSO is closer to tar. Put a dot under your tongue and it sits there as a lump, touching very little tissue. Most of it ends up swallowed anyway.
Two fixes, and you can use both.
Thin it. Squeeze your dose onto a spoon, add two or three drops of MCT or coconut oil, and work them together with a toothpick. Now it spreads. You can also make a week’s worth at once in a small dropper bottle. That’s basically a homemade tincture, and it’s how a lot of our regulars handle it.
Park it. Instead of under the tongue, press the dot between your lower gum and cheek, the way people use nicotine pouches. It stays put, it’s touching tissue the whole time, and you can talk without swallowing it.
Timing that actually works
Ninety seconds is the minimum. Two to three minutes is where the real gain is. Set a timer on your phone for the first week until it’s habit.
Keep your mouth empty for ten minutes before and after. No coffee, no water, no gum, and definitely not toothpaste, which will make it taste even worse. Swallow whatever’s left at the end. It’s not wasted, it’s just going the slow route.
Do it at the same time each day if you’re using it regularly. Consistency matters more than perfection.
Dose the same way you’d start anything
Rice grain or smaller. That’s still the starting point. If you’ve been swallowing RSO for a while and switch to sublingual, don’t assume you can take more because it “feels lighter.” Run the same dose two or three times first, then adjust.
And give it the full 45 minutes before you judge. Faster than an edible is not the same as instant.
When sublingual isn’t the answer
Some people never get past the taste. Some batches are just harsh. If you’ve tried the thinning trick and still dread it, stop fighting it. Swallow it in a capsule or a spoon of peanut butter and accept the slower onset. Or switch to a proper tincture, which was built for this job.
The best method is the one you’ll keep doing on a Tuesday when you’re tired. If you want to try a couple of options side by side, come by and we’ll show you what’s on the shelf right now.

RSO sublingual: questions people ask us
How long should I hold RSO under my tongue?
Ninety seconds is the floor and two to three minutes is better. The oil is thick, so it needs time to spread and soak in. Most of what you have not absorbed by then you will swallow, which still works, just slower.
Does sublingual RSO hit faster than eating it?
Usually. Patients report feeling it in 20 to 45 minutes instead of an hour or two. It can also feel slightly less heavy, because less of it is converted by the liver into the stronger metabolite.
Why does it burn or taste so bad?
RSO is a raw, full-spectrum extract with residual plant material. Some batches are harsher than others. Mixing the dose into a drop of coconut or MCT oil softens it a lot.
Is the dose different sublingually?
Start the same, rice grain or smaller. It may feel a bit lighter and end a bit sooner. Adjust after two or three tries, not after one.
